House Training Is Not Just For Houses

On Saturday, I took Hank to a dog training seminar by Pia Silvani and was very impressed by how well behaved he was around all of the other trainers and their dogs.

The seminar (which was terrific) ran late so I had to rush home as I was expecting guests and wanted to pick up some fruit for them to nosh on the way home. Soooooo, I took a chance.

I drove straight to the Fruit & Vegetable market on Court St., found a parking spot right in front, cracked the windows for Hank, put a quarter in the meter and ran in. I was gone exactly 3 minutes (I know because I still had 27 minutes left on the meter).

When I came back to the car I expected Hank to be in the driver’s seat, maybe chewing on a headrest. But he wasn’t, he was in the back seat and looked very excited that I was coming back. I was very pleased until I opened the door and saw… HE’D PEED ON MY SEAT!

Like I said, I knew I was taking a chance. I knew it was a possibility, but somehow still couldn’t believe it. I put plastic bags down and drove home hovering over the seat (thank goodness Jack makes me do all of those squats).

This story is a great example of how dogs don’t quickly understand that house training goes for the house, the car, your parents’ house, your office, the post office, the pharmacy, etc, etc, etc.
